Freshman & Sophomore College Checklist

Freshman Year

· Be aware that you are now beginning to establish your permanent high school transcript. From now on, every semester grade you earn will become a permanent addition to your official record. Strive for excellence.
· Consider Confer High School’s graduation and college entrance requirements before selecting or changing any classes.
· Understand the “Calculation of CCHE Admission Index,” which identifies the combinations of grade point averages and college entrance examination scores (ACT and/or SAT) needed for admission to state-funded colleges.
· Become involved in extra-curricular activities, sports, and community service.
· Take standardized achievement tests seriously. They serve as an important measure of your progress and help determine placement in honors and Advanced Placement classes.
· Participate in school and outside activities to explore your interests.
· Do something meaningful in the summer to help build your resume and volunteer hours.
· Register on Naviance. See your counselor for details.

Sophomore Year

· Take the PLAN test (practice ACT) for all sophomores in October.
· Sophomores in accelerated courses may want to take the PSAT (also offered in October) as a practice for junior year.
· Make educational plans for future high school course work and understand college and career information sources.
· Visit the Post Grad Center in counseling office and become familiar with its resources.
· If possible, visit some colleges during the summer to get a feel for different kinds of campuses.
· Use your summer wisely such as getting a job and/or doing volunteer work.
· Continue to use program such as CollegeInColorado and Naviance (located on CHS counseling website) to evaluate your changing ideas about the future.
